 Drive Train Issues
Drive train issues is an understatement. Tonight leaving from a stop sign my rear driveshaft decided it would be much happier divorced from my rear axle yoke. And let me tell you this D-vorce was an ugly one. In the midst of this "seperation" my t-case also took some sort of a hit and was "bleeding" all over the pavement. i was able to limp it off in front wheel drive to the nearest parking lot. while trying to get it home it just made horrible grinding noises when trying to go forwards or backwards with no actual movement. Now i am unsure if its chain or gear drive but something in there ain't happy. So if anyone knows someone or has some spare parts they want to sell me for CHEAP let me know. Oh and don't go wheeling till i get my junk going cause i wanna go...
Pics to follow in daylight:(

 Re: Drive Train Issues
That will likely be an NP231 t-case which is chain drive. What year, engine, transmission is your YJ? Assuming it's a 4.2L?? That sucks big man! I'll keep my eyes open for anything... Good luck! P.S. at least Mel can't get mad at you cuz you weren't wheeling it when it happened...

 Re: Drive Train Issues
90 was last year with the 4.2L. now yours is 91 with 4.0L but is a a ax-15 or still an ax-5 with a NP231 t-case. here is where you are lucky. some xj's ran 231 t-case's and one of our members collects the old cherokee's. altan would be your man. now did you not run a sye kit with your lift or a t-case drop? i know i have wicked driveline vibration at the 3 inch lift and i have heard that without the proper kit in the rear it can wear out the chain and also start to crack the rear tail housing of the t-case. a few things i have read up on. so if you have a chance but a t-case with a sye kit and than your stuck buying another driveshaft and since you said the rear yoke might be buggie a good time to take your axles from your dodge and maybe your 203 or 205 tcase and match and mount into the jeep. good time to play and build bigger. something breaks make it bigger and tougher. unless your mark where bigger is always better. even when it runs fine as is(but then where do i get my new parts?) no mark bigger is better... haha

 Re: Drive Train Issues
Best to find out whats wrong for sure before picking up a bunch of parts you may not even need. If only the chain went, that can be fairly cheap to replace. Chances are there is more damage though ie: is the case/tail housing cracked cracked? Do the t-case gears spin freely with the chain disconnected? The big piece to replace will be the T-case housing if it did get cracked. Check www.car-part.com , i found a couple t-cases there in Canada for reasonably cheap after a quick search.

 Re: Drive Train Issues
That jeep had stock springs and just a 3" body lift right?

 Re: Drive Train Issues
DONE!. HAHAHAHAHA i broke it 2 days ago and fixed it last night... well almost. Pulled my 231 out, (its so busted its own mamma wouldn't recognize it),went over to Bucks after some research and found the the XJ without "selec trac" have the 231s. the had at least 3 more plus the 242 (selec trac) all over. went and found a low ish miles one and me and a buddy had it out in no time. gettin loaded out with the old DY-NO-MITE Only thing i gotta do is replace my rear U-joint in my shaft and put it back together. Had to drive on the trailer in front wheel drive. Felt like a Jeep compass with big tires hahaha. I almost had it real easy because when at my buddy’s shop we were talking to a guy about my jeep and he had a ZJ smashed in his yard. And they too had the 231 but a heavier version and it was already out! but it was the 242:( no dice. and it had been recently rebuilt too. My jeep is 2.5 spring 2 body so there really isn't too much driveline vib. and i considered going with a slip joint eliminator kit (about $260ish) but i still might raise it to a 4" so then i will get the proper CV style rear shaft. There was 3 minor differences in the cases. and the xj was a 90 and mines a 93 both 4.0 and both ax15. 1- front drive shaft output slightly different wouldn't accept my u-joint straps or bolts- switched from my original 2-Yj has vacuum disco switch on transfer case and XJ has switch for 4wd indicator- no problem since i have a manual line for my axle disconnect. 3- XJ rear output seal has a longer rubber snout – gotta go to piston ring and get a new U-joint and rear seal this way I know it shouldn’t leak anyway those things don’t like the drive shaft sliding in and out. and actually the chain was in good shape its a little stretched but thats normal the reason i couldn't make it move was the case was soooo split it wouldn't keep the spacing for the sprockets and it would slip. Thanks for all the help and tips! Quote: P.S. at least Mel can't get mad at you cuz you weren't wheeling it when it happened... Funny i said the same thing....HAHA

 Re: Drive Train Issues
And because i am sure it will come up in conversation. Yes i know pulling a YJ with an exlporer, on a single axle trailer to boot is not smart or legal but i didn't want to make 2 trips and i had to work out where i was fixing the jeep. So scold me quitely if you must...

 Re: Drive Train Issues
ouch that t-case is (i can't swear on here) screwed(nicely put) and glad you got what you need. a question i got is with the 2 inch body lift how do you notice everything? does it throw a lot out or did you have to change anything. like rad support and all? i am thinking of a 1 inch body lift but not 2. almost too big

 Re: Drive Train Issues
gotter done. 2 u joints and tail seal- $60 used t-case - $100 I am calling this a cheap fix As for the Body lift i couldn't really say because thats how i bought it. but its funny you mention that because while under there this afternoon i noticed my e-brake cable is rubbing on a body seam and wearing though the case. so i will have to zippy tie that back. As for the rad support, thats all raised with the front clip so no issues there. but i see what your saying i had an s-10 with a body lift and the guy who i bought it from just cut the bottom of the shroud out. not the best solution but hey it worked.
